Blood Test

Preparing for your blood test

Important: All clinical services, including prescribing, dispensing, and medical consultations, are provided by our regulated clinical partner, Mediva Pharmacy. Laboratory analysis is carried out exclusively by Alderley Diagnostic Laboratory (UKAS No. 21351). For clinical questions about your blood test results, please contact Mediva directly.

The tips below apply to all blood tests unless your specific test instructions state otherwise.

  • Take your test in the morning, ideally before 10am, and on an empty stomach.
  • Drink plenty of water beforehand to stay well hydrated and help blood flow.
  • Post your sample immediately after taking it, ideally before 12pm.
  • Post Monday–Thursday only. Posting later in the day or before a weekend may delay delivery and could mean the sample needs to be retaken.
  • Most results are available within 2 - 5 working days after the laboratory receives your sample.
Using your home blood test device

Your kit includes full instructions. Please read them carefully before starting. The tips below will help you get the best sample.

  • Press the device firmly against your upper arm, pushing evenly all around the edge to make sure it is stuck securely.
  • Push the button firmly for 2 seconds, then release. The vacuum activates when the button is released, drawing blood into the device.
  • Keep your arm straight down at your side during collection. Resting your arm on a surface can slow blood flow and increase clotting.
  • Once collection is complete, gently invert the tube to mix, as directed in your kit instructions.
What to do BEFORE a Complete Blood Test
  • Time your test: take it between 7–10am. Testosterone levels are highest in the morning, so morning testing gives the most accurate results.
  • Fasting for cholesterol: for more accurate cholesterol results, you may wish to fast before taking your test. This is not required for a standard complete blood test, you can eat normally unless additional panels (lipids, glucose, insulin) are included.
  • Stay hydrated: drink water beforehand. Dehydration can thicken the blood and affect results, particularly red blood cell count.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24 hours before. Heavy training can temporarily change white blood cells and muscle-related markers. Alcohol can dilute plasma volume and temporarily reduce immune cell counts.
  • Medications and supplements: if you take any regular medication or supplements (e.g. steroids, NSAIDs, testosterone, iron), please speak to your GP or prescribing clinician before taking the test, as some can affect results.
  • Relax before the test.
What to do BEFORE a TRT Monitoring Blood Test
  • Time your test: always test at the same time of day, ideally between 8–10am. Testosterone follows a daily rhythm and levels are highest in the morning. Testing at a consistent time is essential for meaningful comparison between results.
  • Injectables: Avoid your TRT medication 24–48 hours before. Testing at 'trough' (your lowest level before the next dose) gives a true reading to assess whether your dosage is accurate.
  • Gels: Apply your gel after taking your blood test. Do not test within 8 hours of gel application. Topical testosterone can contaminate the sample and falsely elevate your results.
  • Avoid sexual activity and ejaculation for 24 hours before, as this can temporarily lower testosterone levels in some men.
  • Avoid heavy strength training for 24–48 hours before. Intense exercise can spike testosterone and then rapidly reduce it, leading to misleading results.
  • Do not take biotin (vitamin B7) for 48 hours before your test.
What to do BEFORE a Weight Loss Blood Test
  • Fast for 8–10 hours beforehand. Only water is permitted during your fast. No food, juice, coffee, or supplements. Fasting ensures accurate glucose and lipid readings.
  • Stay well hydrated. Drink plenty of water before your test to help your veins and prevent dizziness.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before. Alcohol can raise triglycerides and affect liver markers.
  • Avoid high-fat meals the night before. These can artificially raise cholesterol and triglyceride readings.
  • Continue your regular medications unless otherwise advised. GLP-1 medication does not need to be paused before your blood test.
  • No intense exercise 24 hours before. Hard training can elevate liver enzymes and inflammation markers.
  • Morning testing is ideal as it is easier to fast overnight and you will have a more stable metabolic baseline.
How long will it take to get my results?

Once Alderley Diagnostic Laboratory (our UKAS-accredited laboratory partner) receives your sample, results are typically available within 2–5 working days.

Turnaround times may vary depending on the test panel and sample quality. You will be notified by Cannaray Wellness when your results are ready.

To give your sample the best chance of arriving promptly, please post it Monday–Thursday on the same day it is collected.

What happens if my results are abnormal?

If any of your results fall outside the standard reference ranges, this will be flagged in your results report. Reference ranges are provided as general guidance and may vary depending on age, sex, and individual health circumstances. A result outside the range does not necessarily mean something is wrong.

We recommend discussing any out-of-range results with your GP or a qualified healthcare professional, who can interpret them in the context of your full health picture.

In the rare event that results indicate a potential urgent health concern, it is advised to seek medical attention promptly. If you are ever in doubt about your results, please contact your GP.

In an emergency, call 999.

Sample processing and retesting

Occasionally, blood samples may not be suitable for full analysis due to factors such as insufficient sample volume, sample clotting, or delays during transit.

When this happens, the laboratory will review the sample to determine which biomarkers can be reliably analysed. Retest eligibility depends on the type of test purchased - please see our terms and conditions. For smaller targeted tests: if a biomarker cannot be analysed, we will normally provide a replacement test so the missing marker can be re-analysed. Please see our terms and conditions.

For larger multi-marker panels: these tests measure a higher number of biomarkers. If one or two biomarkers cannot be analysed, the remaining results will still be issued and the test will be considered successfully processed.

A replacement test may be offered only if:

  • Three or more biomarkers cannot be analysed, or
  • The sample is rejected by the laboratory due to a quality issue outside your control.

Where this occurs, Cannaray Wellness may provide a complimentary replacement test at our discretion.

Please see our terms and conditions. To reduce the risk of sample failure, please follow the instructions included with your kit and post your sample Monday–Thursday on the same day the test is taken.

Weight Loss

Are weight loss injections effective?

Important: Mounjaro and Wegovy are prescription-only medicines (POM). They are only available following a clinical assessment by a qualified prescriber. All prescribing and dispensing is carried out by our regulated clinical partner, Mediva Pharmacy. Cannaray Wellness does not prescribe or dispense medication.

Are weight loss injections effective?

Yes. Clinical studies show that weight loss injections like Mounjaro and Wegovy are highly effective when combined with lifestyle changes. In trials, patients lost an average of 15–22% of their body weight over 68–72 weeks. These medications work by regulating appetite, slowing digestion, and helping you feel fuller for longer. Results vary by individual and are best achieved alongside a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

Wegovy vs. Mounjaro: what's the difference?

Wegovy and Mounjaro are both prescription-only, once-weekly injections licensed for weight management.

While they work in similar ways, each has distinct characteristics worth considering.Mounjaro (tirzepatide):

  • Shown in clinical trials to support up to 22.5% body weight loss (see footnote 1) through appetite reduction.
  • Licensed for weight loss and recommended by the NHS.
  • Tirzepatide acts on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, reducing appetite and helping you feel fuller for longer. Its dual mechanism is considered one of the reasons for its strong clinical results.
  • Suitable for overweight adults or adults living with obesity.
  • Injected once per week. Works best combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Wegovy (semaglutide):

  • Shown in clinical trials to support up to 15% body weight loss (see footnote 2) through appetite reduction.
  • Licensed for weight loss and recommended by the NHS.
  • Semaglutide mimics a natural hormone your body releases after eating, sending signals to your brain to reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness.
  • Suitable for overweight adults or adults living with obesity.
  • Injected once per week. Designed to be combined with a healthy diet and regular physical activity.
What does Mounjaro do?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates both the GLP-1 and GIP receptors in your brain. This dual action helps control your blood sugar levels, reduces your appetite, and makes you feel fuller for longer after meals. Because it targets two receptors rather than one, Mounjaro is associated with some of the strongest weight loss outcomes seen in clinical trials, with results typically becoming noticeable within a few weeks of starting treatment.

What does Wegovy do?

Wegovy (semaglutide) works by mimicking GLP-1, a natural hormone your body releases after eating. By activating GLP-1 receptors in the brain, it reduces hunger and increases feelings of fullness, which helps regulate your calorie intake over time. In trials, patients achieved an average loss of up to 15% of their body weight when combining Wegovy with diet and exercise changes.

What should I expect from my first Mounjaro order?

Your first Mounjaro delivery will include a one-month starter supply: four weekly pens at the introductory 0.25mg dose. This lower starting dose helps your body adjust to treatment and reduces the likelihood of side effects. Your medication must be stored in a refrigerator until use. Your delivery will also include a detailed instruction leaflet.

Your Mediva pharmacist and clinical team are available to support you with any questions about using your Mounjaro pens or storing your medication safely.

What should I expect from my first Wegovy order?

Your first Wegovy delivery will include a one-month starter supply: four weekly pens at the introductory 0.25mg dose. This lower starting dose helps your body adjust to treatment and reduces the likelihood of side effects. Your medication must be stored in a refrigerator until use. Your delivery will also include a detailed instruction leaflet.

Your Mediva pharmacist and clinical team are available to support you with any questions about using your Wegovy pens or storing your medication safely.

What Does Wegovy Do?

By interacting with the GLP-1 receptor, Wegovy’s active ingredient, Semaglutide, mimics a natural hormone your body usually releases after eating. This sends signals to your brain to reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness, which regulates your appetite and calorie intake. In trials, patients achieved an average loss of up to 15%* of their body weight when they combined Wegovy with diet and exercise changes. The treatment can also be used to help control your blood sugar levels.

Where do I inject Mounjaro or Wegovy?

You can inject in one of the following areas once per week:

  • Stomach/abdomen: at least two centimetres away from the belly button.
  • Front of your thighs: midway between your hip and knee.
  • Back or outer part of your upper arm: only if someone else is administering the injection.

Rotate your injection site each week to reduce discomfort and skin reactions.

How long does Mounjaro or Wegovy take to work?

Both medications begin working from your first dose, though meaningful weight loss typically develops over several weeks. In clinical trials, patients lost up to 22.5% of their starting weight on the Mounjaro 15mg maintenance dose after 72 weeks. Results vary from person to person, and the best outcomes are seen when treatment is combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

What are the possible side effects of weight loss injections?

The most common side effects are gastrointestinal and include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. These are usually mild to moderate and tend to improve after the first few weeks as your body adjusts.

Less common side effects include fatigue, headache, and dizziness. Serious side effects are rare but can include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, or allergic reactions.Your Mediva clinician will discuss all potential risks with you during your consultation and will monitor your progress regularly.

Important: These medications may not be suitable for you if you have: a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN2), a history of pancreatitis, or if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Please disclose your full medical history during your consultation.

How long do I need to stay on weight loss injections?

Weight loss medications are typically used as long-term treatments. Most people remain on them for at least 12–18 months, though some continue longer to maintain their weight loss. These medications help manage the biological factors that make sustained weight loss difficult.

Your Mediva clinician will work with you to determine the right duration based on your progress, goals, and overall health. If you decide to stop, this should be done gradually under medical supervision.

How much does it cost?

We offer two prescription-only weight loss injections to support your health journey. The Wegovy treatment starts from £122, while the Mounjaro treatment is available from £186.

We believe in fully transparent pricing: no hidden fees, no unexpected increases on the same dose, and no misleading low starting prices. What you see is what you pay, so you can plan your treatment journey with confidence.

TRT

What is testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)?

Important: TRT is a prescription-only medicine (POM). It is only available following a clinical assessment by a qualified prescriber. All prescribing and dispensing is carried out by our regulated clinical partner, Mediva Pharmacy. Cannaray Wellness does not prescribe or dispense medication.

What is testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)?

TRT is a medical treatment that supplements testosterone levels in men who have clinically low testosterone (hypogonadism). It involves the regular administration of testosterone through injections, gels, or patches to restore hormone levels to a normal, healthy range. TRT can help improve symptoms including low energy, reduced muscle mass, decreased libido, mood changes, and difficulty concentrating.

How do I know if I need TRT?

TRT may be appropriate if you are experiencing symptoms of low testosterone alongside blood test results showing levels below the normal range. Common symptoms include persistent fatigue, decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, loss of muscle mass, increased body fat, mood changes, and difficulty concentrating.

Diagnosis requires both symptom assessment and laboratory confirmation through blood tests. Your Mediva clinician will evaluate your complete health profile to determine whether TRT is medically appropriate for you.

Can women access treatments?

Yes. Women can access our weight loss programmes. Mounjaro and Wegovy are approved for weight management in both men and women. We also offer blood test panels designed to support weight management.

Testosterone therapy can also be clinically appropriate for women in some circumstances, for example to address symptoms related to hormonal changes. If you are interested in exploring this, please discuss your symptoms and history with your Mediva clinician during your consultation, who will advise whether this is appropriate for you.

Using your testosterone gel safely

The following guidance is based on standard clinical recommendations. All clinical advice is provided by Mediva Pharmacy. If you have any questions specific to your prescription or application technique, please contact Mediva directly.Apply your gel every morning following these steps:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Apply the gel to clean, dry, hairless skin on your shoulders, upper arms, or abdomen, as directed in your prescription instructions.
  • Allow the gel to dry fully before dressing. This takes approximately 5–10 minutes.
  • Wash your hands again after application.
  • Avoid swimming or showering for at least 2 hours after application.
  • Avoid skin-to-skin contact with others, especially children or pregnant women, until the gel has dried completely. Topical testosterone can transfer to others through skin contact.

How to use your Testosterone Injection Safely?

Check the contents of the box
  • Vial of testosterone
  • Disposable syringe
  • Two green (21G) needles
  • Alcohol swabs
  • Yellow sharps bin
Before you begin:
  • Find a clean, well-lit area. Clean the surface and wash your hands.
  • Remove the vial and check: the label confirms it is the correct medication; the expiry date (MM/YY - do not use if expired); and the fluid is clear with no discolouration, cloudiness, or particles.
Preparing the injection:
  • Attach a green needle to the syringe, keeping the cap on. Set aside.
  • Flick the top of the vial firmly to ensure all liquid is in the main body of the vial.
  • Snap off the top of the vial by gripping it firmly and pushing away from the dot on the neck.
  • Remove the needle cap, insert the needle into the vial so the tip rests against the bottom, then slowly pull back the barrel to draw up all the liquid.
  • Remove the needle from the vial, then carefully detach and dispose of it in the sharps bin. Dispose of the vial and top in the sharps bin too.
  • Hold the syringe upright with the plunger pointing down. Tap the barrel gently until any air bubbles rise to the top, then slowly push the plunger up to expel them.
  • Attach the second green needle. The injection is now ready.
When selecting your injection site, there are two common sites:
  • Outer thigh (vastus lateralis): suitable for self-injection. Divide your thigh horizontally into three equal sections. Inject into the middle third, on the outer edge.
  • Upper outer buttock (gluteus maximus): best used when someone else is giving the injection. Mentally divide one buttock into four quarters and inject into the upper outer quarter.
Giving the injection:
  • Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab and allow it to air dry.
  • Form a 'V' shape with the fingers of your non-dominant hand on the skin around the site, and aim the injection between the arms of the V.
  • Insert the needle fully at a 90-degree angle using a quick, firm motion.
  • Release the skin and use that hand to grip the barrel of the syringe.
  • Gently pull back on the plunger to check for blood. If you see blood, withdraw the needle immediately, discard the syringe, and start again with a fresh preparation. If there is no blood, slowly push the plunger down to deliver the full dose.
  • Remove the needle and syringe. Press a clean swab gently on the site until bleeding stops.
  • Dispose of the whole needle and syringe in the sharps bin.
Tips for reducing discomfort:
  • Allow the medication to reach room temperature before injecting.
  • Remove all air bubbles before injecting.
  • Ensure the skin is fully dry before injecting after using the alcohol swab.
  • Keep the muscle relaxed during injection.
  • Break through the skin quickly and smoothly.
  • Rotate your injection site with each dose.
  • Avoid changing the direction of the needle as it enters or exits the skin.
Other advice:
  • Attend all follow-up appointments and blood tests as scheduled.
  • Contact your Mediva clinician promptly if you notice mood changes, sleep disturbance, changes in libido, acne, or other unexpected symptoms.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience a prolonged or painful erection (priapism) - this is a medical emergency. Contact Mediva to inform them after seeking care.
  • For any other concerns, please contact Mediva. Please also see our terms and conditions.

Clinical Pathway & Eligibility

Who is eligible to use Cannaray Wellness services?

To purchase from Cannaray Wellness, you must be aged 18 or over and resident in the United Kingdom. We currently only deliver to UK addresses.

Prescription treatments require an additional clinical assessment by Mediva Pharmacy. Eligibility for specific treatments including GLP-1 weight loss injections and TRT will be determined by Mediva's prescribing clinicians based on your health profile and consultation responses. Not all patients will be eligible.

Can I transfer my prescription from another provider?

Yes. If you are currently receiving treatment elsewhere, Mediva may be able to continue your care. You will need to complete our medical intake process and provide your current prescription details and recent blood work.

Your Mediva clinician will review your records to assess whether safe continuation of treatment is possible. In some cases, new blood tests may be required, or your treatment plan may need to be adjusted to align with Mediva's clinical protocols.

When am I registered as a patient with Mediva?

Patient registration for clinical services is carried out by Mediva Pharmacy, not by Cannaray Wellness. Once you have expressed an interest in a clinical service through our platform, Mediva will contact you directly to complete your registration. You should not consider yourself registered for clinical services until you have received confirmation from Mediva Pharmacy.

Should I tell my GP I am using Cannaray Wellness services?

Yes, we strongly recommend keeping your GP informed of any new treatments or prescriptions you receive through Cannaray Wellness. Your GP holds your full medical history and is best placed to ensure that any new treatment is appropriate alongside your existing health conditions or medications.

If your health status changes e.g, a new diagnosis or a new medication, you must also inform Mediva Pharmacy promptly as this may affect your suitability for a service or prescription.

How often will I need a follow-up appointment?

Follow-up frequency depends on your treatment:

  • Weight loss injections: check-ins every 4–6 weeks initially, then monthly once you are stable on your therapeutic dose.
  • TRT: a symptom check between weeks 4–6, then follow-ups every 3–6 months for the first year, reducing to every 6 months once your levels are optimised.

All follow-up appointments are managed by Mediva and include symptom review, progress assessment, and blood work to monitor your response to treatment.

Safety, Side Effects & Support

What should I do if I experience side effects?

Please follow this escalation pathway:

  • Mild side effects (e.g. nausea, injection site reactions): contact Mediva Pharmacy for advice. They can suggest management strategies or adjustments.
  • Moderate side effects that concern you or interfere with daily life: contact your Mediva prescribing clinician promptly.
  • Severe symptoms including chest pain, severe abdominal pain, vision changes, signs of allergic reaction, or a prolonged/painful erection - call 999 or attend A&E immediately. Inform Mediva afterwards.
Who do I contact if I have a question about my medication?
  • General or non-urgent questions: contact Mediva Pharmacy directly. Mediva aim to respond within 24 hours on business days.
  • Urgent clinical questions: contact your Mediva prescribing clinician directly.
  • Emergency: call 999 or attend A&E.
How do I report a problem with my prescription?

If there is an issue with your prescription - whether an error, delivery problem, or concern about the medication - contact Mediva Pharmacy directly. They will work to resolve the issue and ensure you receive the correct medication.

You can also report any suspected medication defects to the MHRA via the Yellow Card Scheme: https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk

How do you keep my health data secure?

Cannaray Wellness and Mediva take data protection extremely seriously and are fully compliant with UK GDPR. All personal and medical information is encrypted in transit and at rest. Our systems are regularly audited for security vulnerabilities. Only authorised healthcare professionals directly involved in your care can access your medical records. We never share your data with third parties for marketing purposes without your explicit consent.

How is my identity verified?

During your consultation, your Mediva clinician will ask you to provide photo ID to verify your identity. This ensures that prescriptions are issued only to the correct individual and protects both you and us from fraud. Your identity documents are handled securely in accordance with data protection regulations.

What happens if my prescription needs to be changed or stopped?

Your Mediva clinician may recommend changing or stopping your medication if you experience problematic side effects, are not seeing the expected results, or if your health circumstances change. Any modifications are made gradually and safely under medical supervision. Medication is never stopped abruptly where there are risks associated with discontinuation. You will be fully informed about the reasons for any changes and what to expect during the transition.

Can I cancel my subscription at any time?

Yes, you can cancel your subscription whenever you choose. However, we strongly recommend discussing this with your clinician first, especially if you're on TRT or weight loss medications, as some treatments shouldn't be stopped abruptly. We can help you taper off safely if needed. There are no cancellation fees, though we ask for reasonable notice to avoid unnecessary prescription fulfilment.
